Response #7

žChoose one of the following literary terms: motif, personification, and hyperbole to answer the next question.  How was Elie able to effectively explain what happened to him using this device?  Why is figurative language so helpful in explaining different situations?

  1. Elie was able to effectively explain what happened using hyperbole because his experience helped him do so. Hyperbole is an exaggeration. For example, in the beginning of the novel Elie arrives in Aushwitz and they are waiting to find out whether or not he will be seperated from his family, he uses hyperbole to deceive how slowly things are moving. "This conversation lasted no more than a few seconds. It seemed like an eternity." In this statement Elie is exaggerating how long it took for him to find out him and his family's fate.
Figurative language is helpful in explaining different situations because certain dilemmas call for a certain reaction. For example, in the quote stated above, you would not say that is was alliteration because it didn't use the repetition of similar words.

    1. I believe that you are correct ! As the book night goes on you continue to see the literary device being used in the way that you stated.I also agree with the statement you made about Elie using a hyperbole to decives how slow things are actually going.

  2. Elie uses the motif in an effective way by continuing it on throughout the story. Also by allowing the motif to be the biggest part of the story. The biggest motif in the story is the death of Elie's spiritual life. This motif is shown through the death of a young pipel.A motif is an image ,action , or figure that helped to create the theme. The death of the pipel did this by Elie have to use a powerful tool of imagery to show that his faith was dead and gone, this was a major contributor to the theme of the novel.
Figurative language is used to be more persuasive and effective in your speech. When Elie Wiesel is using figurative language because he wants to get his message across stronger. Whenever using figurative language the author or writer just wants the reader to dig deeper within the text , so his or hers message would be stronger.

    1. I want to add that with using the motif and hyperbole.Today in groups I learned about how Elie used both of these literay devices.Elie used a seris of both to create the theme and as well as the mood and tone. Throughout group you also learned about how the quotes from night convey both literary devices in a strong way.

  3. Elie uses hyperbole to effectively explain his experiences in the Holocaust because they emphasize how severe the situations he was put in were. When he uses a hyperbole, he wants the readers to get an idea of how it felt like, it helps give a better point of view.“I wanted to run away, but my feet were nailed to the floor. Idek grabbed me by the throat.” Elie wasn't actually nailed to the ground, he was just emphasizing that he felt as if he couldn't move. He used hyperbole to express his thoughts and feelings when something occurred to him.
Figurative language helps explain different situations because it gives a more deeper meaning. For example Elie used the angelic pipel's deaths as a symbol for his death of religion and faith. It can also help the reader make more connections.

    1. Another way figurative language helps explain different situations is by making it more easier for the reader to comprehend as well as making it not so lengthy. In group 1, we talked about how the use of hyperbole impacted a quote. Elie saying they were "the only men on earth", wasn't meant to be taken literary. It meant that since no one offered to help them, they were stuck with the abuse and forced to deal with it, or to kill themselves.

    2. I agree that this story was full of hyperboles. I think that a lot of them are internal thoughts. They are all throughout the story and keep the reader hooked. They make the reader say wow was it really that bad. They are really important to any type of story.

  4. Elie uses hyperbole to effectively explain his experiences because without it we would not be able to understand exactly what he had to go through to live. A hyperbole is used when the author tries to put the person reading in their shoes. For example in the story Elie talked about how his foot felt and because he used such descriptive words I was able to understand how his foot felt. When he was marching he was thinking to himself that he was going to lose his foot and was fine with that then his attention was drawn back to reality. He was emphasizing the fact that his foot was bleeding and that he thinks he may lose his foot.
It is helpful because it helps the reader understand just how bad the situation is. Without the use of hyperboles the reader wouldn’t be able to understand what the character was thinking. Hyperboles help me personally by helping me relate to the text. Sometimes I start to drift and then I will come across a hyperbole and it will help me reconnect with the text. I feel that hyperboles are needed in every book to make them interesting and relatable.

    1. I would like to add that hyperboles are very important when the book is an memoir. I think this because without the authors thoughts throughout the story the reader would be un able to connect with the text. For example in the story when Elie thought about leaving his weak father to die. INstead he began to think how horrible that thought was and began taking care of his farther.

    2. And that a hyperbole is an exaggeration of the authors thoughts or ideas.

  5. Elie was able to effectively explain what happened to him using motif. In the beginning we learn about how religious Elie is and how he greatly wanted to learn more about it, and this is mentioned many times during his time in the camps as well; his faith is falling faster and faster as he experiences terrible and horrible things that he soon has lost it completely and there is no faith in god left. He changes and the choices he makes are affected by his continuously falling faith until the point he starts think of himself and wish his father didn't make the dumb mistakes that caused him to be beaten.

    1. Hyperbole means to exaggerate, and to not be taken literally. I get what you mean though, the use of hyperbole can be used as to express feelings and emotions better. Elie saying " I want to runaway but my feet were nailed to the floor" exaggerated him not being able to move, but it was expressing how he was so scared or nervous.

    2. I agree with what Ashley said, I think you've confused hyperbole with another form of figurative language, but that's okay because we know what you were getting at. Next time look the word up if needed, to make sure you know what you are implying.

  7. Elie was able to use the literary device hyperbole to help explain what happened to him and the other Jews during the Death March in a way that the reader was able to understand how terrifying and rough the match was. When he says in his quote that they were masters of the nature made me feel like they felt like after the run that nothing can really stop them, but the soldiers running with them with there weapons trained on them. Especially for Elie he was running with a hurt foot but there was nothing he could but run. And then nothing was better after the run when he describe the men acting like beast trying to get one piece of bread just to have a little to eat fighting and ripping each other apart and the guards making them act like that.
And this part might not be hyperbole when he described how heartless the men became only looking out for themselves and throwing the bodies away and people turning on there own family which is what Elie almost did and then later in the book did do.And also at the end when the resistance came to free them they didn't want revenge or cared for the ones who dies right along side then but all they wanted was food even later after they ate got clothes replenished themselves they still didn't think or care for them. Using figurative language is useful because it kinda help the auther explain there feeling in a different way that really shows the reader what's happening to them. Like again when Elie was talking about the Death March and what was going on with people dying and being shot and how they used that as a motivation to keep marching.

  8. Wiesel was able to effectively explain how serious death was and how it could attack you at any point. He uses the use of personification to describe how death was all around you. In the book he states "death is dancing all around you", meaning death is heavy at the time. Death is given the human trait of dancing because it's making its way to everyone. Elie also says "death can wrap itself around you at anytime", meaning that death can just come up on you.
It was important for Elie to use this so he could really show how death was hitting everyone. Death wasn't just someone dying and getting buried. To Elie it affected him in many different ways, such as emotionally, spiritually and physically. At times he was grateful about being alive, but then other times he was ready to just kill himself.

  10. I agree with Tyra when she says that Elie effectively used hyperbole to describe what was happening to him a certain times if the book that helps understand what he's going through or how he feels through out the book

  11. Elie was able to use motif to describe what happened to him because motif is just a reoccurring idea, image or symbol. In the story, night was a symbol because Night always occurs when suffering is worst, and its presence reflects Elie's belief that he lives in a world without God. The first time Elie mentions that night fell was when his father is interrupted while telling stories and informed about the deportation of Jews. Also, it was nighttime when Elie first arrived at Birkenau/Auschwitz, and it was pitch darkness when the prisoners begin their horrible run from Buna. Figurative language is so helpful to Elie in explaining different situations because some things hit home and you actually understand and get a better meaning of hat actually happened when you use a literary device.

  12. Elie was able to use personification the give death and his other feelings and events human like characteristics. this helps the reader get a deeper understanding the the events and feeling that occurred in his life. The most personified "thing in this memoir was death. During the Holocaust the Jewish people were SURROUNDED by death. Everywhere they turned death was always behind them. Death was like a gloomy shadow that they couldn't get rid of.
"Around me everything was dancing a dance of death. It made my head reel". There was no where that Elie could go without him seeing someone struggling to keep themselves or someone else alive. a dance of death could look something like a person trying to walk and they're too weak to do so, or someone trying to work when they can't work anymore. This example and various more helped give his memoir a deeper and more emotional feeling.

  13. Elie was able to effectively  explain  what happen using hyperbole  because of his exspirence  in the camps. Hyperbole is a exaggeration. For example, in chapter 8  when Elie was looking for his father an finally found him, his father asked for a cup of coffee, when Elie returned with the cup of coffee he said "I probably  brought him more satisfaction than I had ever done during  my whole childhood." Elie was using hyperbole to exaggerate  on how great his father was reciving the coffee.

Figurative language is helpful in explaining diffrent  situations because it goes more into depth in the situation. Figurative language  helps the reader more understand an visualize what the author or the charter is going through throughout  the story or text.
