Response #2: Explain
your
own reasoning regarding the strange incident with Madame Schachter.
Was it a hallucination, prophecy, vision, or a diving warning? Why did Wiesel choose to include this
incident in his memoir? Is this incident
somehow linked to his faith?
Madame Schachter' incident was a diving warning and a vision. She might have saw the fire caused by genocide, and the Nazi's burning down their homes. Which also should have been a warning to the town, but people just thought she was crazy.Since she kept screaming there was a fire and it wasn't visible, people didn't believe her but then questioned how she knew a fire was gonna appear. Wiesel includes this part into the story because it is counted at a foreshadowing moment, because it indeed happened later on in the story. It connects to his faith because her foreshadowing the fire was a part of Hitler trying to exterminate the Jews and thats when Wiesel's faith was tested.
ReplyDeleteThe Madame may have been upset and mad at the time because of the recent death of her sons and husband when she saw the "prophecy" but that does not disqualify the realness of her “prophecy”. I believe that the "prophecy" was another sign from god that the Jews turned away. The Jews are religious people but I believe at this time they had given up on their religion. A “prophecy” is a vision from god to a person to warn others about what is to come. Madame Schacther was the chosen person to warn the Jews about what was to come at the concentration camp.
ReplyDeleteElie wanted to include this in his memoir to show that the Jews again ignored another sign. While on the train Madame yelled “look!look at it !fire!" the jews were still thinking she was just going mad and didn't know what she was talking about . The Jewish people still believed that the Nazi's were just going to put them to work. elie wanted to show that the Jews were still so neve at this point still. Also that their faith was still so strong at this moment in their journey.
This has a link to elie's faith because i believe his were wiesel used his studies and realized what was really happening at this moment. As a young man Elie took his studies very serious and even learning more that he should. this was stated by his father. I believe that wiesel study so much that he knew what a prophecy was and believed that , That was what was happening to Madame Schacher .
The incident with Madame Schachter was a diving warning I think this is so because everything she was saying was things that would happen to them soon. She was trying to warn her people about what was about to happen to them but instead of them listening she was beaten and ignored. When she was screaming FIRE I see FIRE she was talking about the Nazis burning the Jews bodies. Wiesel chose to include this because he was setting up the story with foreshadowing. He was making hints with a small part that he thought people would read over and ignore. This part of the story is very important due to the fact that he was giving hint to what was going to happen in the future. Yes, this was linked to faith because with her talking about the fire is linked to when Wiesel’s faith was starting to be tested and he needed god to help him overcome his test.
ReplyDeleteMadame Schacter' incident I think was a diving warning. I believe this is because the first few times Madame Schacter made an outburst no one saw anything but nothing was there. She was warning them of what was to come, but they didn't see anything. Wiesel decided to add this in his memoir to foreshadow what their fate was soon to be. Before his experience in the camp he probably didn't think this would matter or be relevant to anything that was going on until after the fact. Yes, Madame Schacter' incident is linked to Elie's faith. It shows the place and time he lost all his faith in God. This was the location where he questioned God's decisions. At this point his faith was being put to the test.
ReplyDeleteI believe the incident regarding Madame Schäcter was a vision. Her visions were reoccurring fairly often throughout their ride to Auschwitz. Of course no one believed her (this seems to be a habit with this community) so they ignored her the best they could. This was included to kind of shed some light on what was happening and what was going to happen to them. I believe this is where his faith started to get a little shaky.
ReplyDeleteI think that the incident involving Madame Schacter was a vision and a divine warning. She visioned flames. She kept seeing flames and a fire and everyone thought she was crazy. She seemed to be seeing it in the same place every time. The first few times, people believed her and went to go look but after the few couple of times, they ended up tying her up and hitting her to make her be quiet. Once they got to camp, she yelled FIRE! I SEE FIRE! When they looked out the window, the indeed saw fire and there was a foul smell like burning flesh,. She was basically warning them of the fires and basically saying that they were going to get burned and all that.
ReplyDeleteWiesel decided to put this incident in his memoir to foreshadow what was going to happen to the Jews there in the camps. This tested his faith because her vision foreshadows what Hitler does in the holocaust to try and get rid of all the Jews .

ReplyDeleteThe incident with Madame Schacter was something abnormal, but it foreshadowed the outcomes of many of the Jews in the concentration camps; it's even stranger that even when she was beat several times she still cried out that a fire was there; burning wildly. This was possibly Gods way of warning the Jews of Sighet that they were going to be burned, and since they all thought Madame Schacter was insane; they only continuously beat her without haste.
ReplyDeleteThis incident is linked to his faith in a way; since he is so religious; its highly likely that he never thought someone could do these things to anyone, yet Nazis have been and this makes him wonder if there actually is a God and why would he let this happen.
He began to question why this was happening and how come he wasn't doing anything to help the situation. but this was just a shift in the winds for him. I guess God was trying to see how strong his faith really was.
