“The Devil’s Arithmetic” uses the compelling literary device of casting the
main character into a parallel universe. Explore the use of this device in
terms of purpose. In what ways could
this fictional experience actually prevent history from repeating?
Edmodo: I shared a folder titled: “Devil’s Arithmetic” Look at the three parts of the
movie I provided for you.
"The Devil's Arithmetic " Uses the literary device of A flashback. This literary device purpose was to show the main character Hannah that her Jewish culture and traditions are not ungrounded.Meaning that she should not make like of what her family is trying to do religiously. As the clips continue we see that hannah dosent want to the dinner her family and she says "passover" with an attidue almost as if she dosent want to attend.
ReplyDeleteThe other part is that Hannah showed no interest in reading the manual the whole family was required to read. The part with Jewish wedding taught Hannah that culture to Jews are important and that they are prideful people.I believe that she began to feel this when she seemed upset watching the synagogue burn down. Hannah's face showed that her feeling were hurt that it hurt feeling even to know that's where her cousin /aunt attended the same synagogue . She even asked " does it more knowing or not knowing".
The Nazi's coming immdeitly told Hannah what was happening and she told her cousin/ aunt.Maybe if she could have told the rabbi of the terrible acts the nazi were capable of they could have been saved . I reason that hannah was still believing that this could not happen to her or that she wasn't in the "new world".
The Devils Arithmetic uses the literary device of flashback as a way for Hannah to have a better understanding of Jewish customs and as a way for readers to get more background knowledge. Both the readers and Hannah lacked knowledge of the background information of the holocaust and including a flashback gave them both a more clearer and deeper idea of what the Jews had to endure.
ReplyDeleteA flashback helped Hannah take the Jewish religion more seriously since she wasn't involving herself in prayers and just wanted to drink the wine. Hannah being sucked into the parallel universe made her open minded to the fact that her family had to encounter horrible treatment during the holocaust. I feel as if that experience will help her mature and feel the same way her family members do about the holiday.
This could have helped prevent history from repeating because she could have told her cousin and family what was going to occur and how to avoid any danger to them. But of course it was a huge matter and no one was prepared for it because it was so bizarre that no one would believe it.
"The Devil's Arithmetic" uses the literary device flashbackor parallelism. I know these devices are used because Hannah a teen from decades after the Holocaust was magically sent back in the past to the days where the Holocaust started to come into play.
ReplyDeleteWhen the Nazis arrived Hannah automatically knew what was happening from the little facts that she did listen to. The Jews were completely clueless and didn't want to believe what Hannah was saying, but Hannah knew exactly what was going to happen. She knew that the Nazis would kill with no problem, they weren't being moved for their own benefits, and the conditions they were about to live in. To prevent something like this from happening again is to stay aware, because of the Holocaust we know the signs to know when one will come again. If we stick together and stand together we could over power the problem and destroy any idea of another Holocaust.
The devils Arithmetic uses foreshadowing because everyone in the story was trying to tell her about the holocaust. Instead of her listening she just kept saying tell me later or I already know she was ignoring what she needed to know. When she was sent to this universe she knew what was going to happen but she didn’t know the details. She didn’t know the details because she never listened to her teachers or her parents. These things she ignored could have helped save her friends or family she was being taught a valuable lesson. This fictional experience could prevent history from repeating because what she learned could help the system never get that weak again. What she learned is that she needs to appreciate what her family went through so she could be who she is today. While she was there she learned that her trying to gets tattoo was stupid because her family was force but shave their head and get numbers tattooed on there arm.
ReplyDeleteThe Devils arithmetic used the literary term of flashback. The purpose was to show hannah the main character how real the holocaust was an still is.Hannaford obviously didn't take her religion seriously because of her actions at the gathering she was acting obnoxious an very rude an disrespectful like she wasn't interested to attend. When she was sent to he universe since she already knew what happen being their an actually seeing what she knew was going to happen was a way of showing her it's real. The things she ignored could have helped her family.I feel the clips I watched could have helped prevent history from repeating itself, because hannah could of easily told her family what was gonna happen an to help them avoid the terror all the Jews went through.

ReplyDeleteThe Devils Arithmetic is about a young jewish girl named Hannah, Who takes a trip to the past during the Holocaust. they use flashback to let Hannah experience what her elders went through during this time. she got a feel of the horror that took place during World War II.
ReplyDeleteHannah was not very accustomed to her Jewish culture, at first she didn't want to go to Passover. but this year she " opened the door" to a whole new experience. she didn't believe what was going on, she thought she was dreaming. but she quickly realized that she in fact was in the holocaust.
Hannah's experience could help prevent history repeating itself by keeping Hannah humble. she took for granted her freedom and she didn't know what possibly could happen to her if she were in that situation. her growing through it made her realize what all the other Jews during that time went through. when the jews were being deported, she let her family know what was going on so they were more aware of the situation at hand. This could help them a lot, knowing what is happening to them.
The Devil's arithmetic uses flashback as a literary device in order to put the main character into a parallel universe. By using flashback this could prevent history from repeating by putting people in these situations where they experience what others in the past had experienced. Most people have the feeling of empathy or sympathy towards those who have suffered for no reason but they'll move on the next day forgetting and no longer caring for that person; by putting these people in these experiences that affected the past it makes them want to prevent what they had "experienced" and what they don't want to happen to their loved ones.
ReplyDeleteThe Devil's Arithmetic uses flashback as a literary device In order to put Hannah, the main character In a parallel universe .It uses flashback because she walks into a "Portal" Which takes her to the Holocaust and there, where she learns all of the things that she didnt hear from her grandparents because she didnt want to listen . She found herself In different situations that her grandparents attempted to tell her and she couldn't remember what was said and once she did remember the trap that her uncle told her about,no one listened because she was in the past. Being in the parallel universe could've prevented a lot if she would've listened to her aunt and uncle when they was trying to tell her what happened to them. Hannan ended up learning alot from that experience and now she will never forget what happened and what took place during the Holocaust, and she will now charish and love being a Jew and will practice and participate in the religious activities without having a attitude Or problem with it.
ReplyDeleteIn Devil's Arithmetic is about a Jewish girl named Hannah goes back into time during the Holocaust. The literary device used in Devil's Arithmetic is flashback. Flashback is used when she has to open the window at the family function. She then gets sent back to time to when the Holocaust was happening. When different events took place she knew what was going on but she couldn't really remember. She only knew what was happening because her grandparents would tell her. After she came back from the flashback she didn't take life for granted anymore because the flashback made her realize that she could've easily been gone.
